Three Weeks, Three Wins for Second Chances
One of IJ’s core beliefs is that the government can’t rely on irrational concerns to stop people from working—and irrational concerns include irrelevant criminal records. So, since 2018, IJ has been leading a campaign to ensure that people who have served their time can get back on their feet. Late this summer, our successes continued at a record clip. In less than three weeks, our “Fresh Start” practice scored three wins.
The right to criticize the government is a pillar of our constitutional republic—embodied in the text and history of the First Amendment. And yet, across the country that right continues to be violated by unaccountable government agents. One particularly blatant example of this abuse happened recently in the small town of Newton, Iowa, where a resident named Noah Petersen was arrested for criticizing his mayor and police department.
Suing for the Right to Teach Vocational Skills in Minnesota
Leda Mox loves horses so much that started a thriving equine massage clinic teaching others who want to learn from her decades’ worth of experience. But the state of Minnesota doesn’t care about Leda’s credentials or her First Amendment rights. Rather than pay exorbitant fees to teach, Leda has teamed up with IJ to challenge the restriction.
When IJ opened our doors in 1991, we set an ambitious goal: to resolve the two major constitutional questions concerning educational choice. Now that we've accomplished that, IJ is partnering with EdChoice, which will, in time, take over the responsibility of ensuring choice programs receive a robust legal defense.
You ever notice those warning labels saying the State of California has carcinogenic concerns about whatever the product is you are buying? Ever also notice that those labels seem to be on a lot of products? Well, you’re not the only one.
Your tax-deductible contribution helps IJ fight for Americans' rights. IJ defends ordinary people who want to pursue their vision of the American Dream but find that the government is standing in their way. We stand with our clients no matter how long their cases take and we win nearly 75% of the time.
