Dear Neighbors,
Earlier this month I joined the Minnesota Farmers Union at their Annual Convention. I spoke about the need to ensure that the farmers who keep us healthy and fed have access to strong and affordable healthcare. Currently, farmers are one of the many segments of our population who struggle to afford healthcare within our current employer-based system. I know our district cares deeply about ensuring our state is healthy and our care systems work for everyone. I look forward to partnering on healthcare legislation next session.
You?re Invited to a Coffee Hour
On Friday, December 8th, I?ll be holding a coffee hour from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Key West Bistro. I am continuing to refine my legislative priorities for the next session and would appreciate your input. I hope to see you there!
Minnesota Values Project Survey?
Almost seven years ago, the Minnesota House DFL started the Minnesota Values Project (also known as MVP) as a partnership between Minnesotans, elected officials and organizations to create a shared vision for the future of our state. Working together, we?ve strengthened our communities by improving education opportunities, making affordable health care a reality, and increasing economic prosperity for all Minnesotans.
Through this project, we have facilitated hundreds of meaningful conversations with people across all of Minnesota about their priorities. We?re continuing this work and want to engage with as many Minnesotans as possible. Looking ahead to the 2024 legislative session, we?re looking to hear more perspectives and feedback from Minnesotans. As part of this effort, you?re invited to take the new Minnesota Values Project survey.?
The survey only takes a few minutes, and as we build a shared vision for our state, your input is crucial in this process. We look forward to hearing from you.
MNsure Open Enrollment is Happening Now
This year?s open enrollment window on the state?s exchange started on November 1st and runs through January 15th, 2024. Minnesotans seeking coverage through MNsure must enroll by December 15th, 2023 to have a full year of health insurance starting on January 1st, 2024. For those who enroll between December 16th, 2023, and January 15, 2024, coverage will begin on February 1st instead.?
Join the Minneapolis Childcare Roundtable
This year, we made progress towards a fully funded childcare system in Minnesota. However, we know the crisis still exists, and there is much more work to do. Families don't have access to the affordable childcare they need, and providers and teachers are still making less than thriving wages. Join parents, providers, teachers, and our Minneapolis delegation of state legislators and council members on December 6 to have a powerful conversation about the crisis still facing our childcare system.
East Phillips Urban Farm Update
For nearly a decade, East Phillips residents have been fighting for clean air, water and soil at the former roof depot site. Earlier this month, the City of Minneapolis accepted a $3.7 million guarantee as proof of payment for the purchase of the Roof Depot site from the community. A project grounded in community, resiliency, and sustainability is one step closer to coming to fruition, and I look forward to continuing to champion this project at the legislature to ensure additional funding is secured next session.
Student voices at the social studies standards hearing
Last session I was the author of a bill to ensure Ethnic Studies is taught in high schools across our state. Earlier this month an Administrative Law Judge held two hearings to receive public input on the proposed revisions to Minnesota?s K-12 social studies standards, which include a new Ethnic Studies strand. The vast majority of the discussion in those hearings focused on the addition of Ethnic Studies, and an article in Sahan Journal highlights some of the comments provided by current students in support of the proposal. Students described the importance of Ethnic Studies in helping them to ?understand history from multiple different perspectives, but also to learn about oneself? and ?find a sense of community and belonging at their school.?
Written comments on the proposed social studies standards can be submitted here until Wednesday, November 29th at 4:30pm.
