Thanksgiving travel was the busiest in years - with 55.4 million travelers traveling long-distance during the Thanksgiving holiday, our roads, bridges, and tunnels are enduring significant wear and tear.

To maintain our infrastructure, the funding for our highway infrastructure known as the "Highway Trust Fund" (HTF) needs to remain solvent. Solvency of the HTF means that there is funding readily available to invest in our nation's infrastructure. This fund receives money primarily from federal excise tax on gas. However, over the last 15 years, a decrease in highway use and increase in fuel efficiency has resulted in funding shortfalls.

[?] Federal lawmakers, states, and localities depend on HTF funding to plan short-term and long-term projects. U.S. equipment manufacturers depend on that same funding to anticipate demand for products, to expand their facilities, to invest in research and development, and to create more family-sustaining jobs.

We cannot continue to put a band-aid on this issue. Solvency (funding) of the HTF is critical to supporting infrastructure jobs directly and indirectly, including the 2.3 million jobs supported by the equipment manufacturing industry.

Tell your member of Congress that a decrease in available funding for the HTF is not an option. By providing the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) with an accurate breakdown of all road user vehicle statistics, we can help predict the real amount of funds needed to pay for critical infrastructure projects and repairs.
