Actions for the week of November 27, 2023
Dear Activists,
In the spirit of gratitude and appreciation, we come to you with deep thanks for your participation in this important work — and a reminder that it is more consequential than ever. As we enter the final weeks of 2023, we hope that the season offers a chance to reflect, recharge, and attend to a few more important action items before we close out the year.
Action 1
🍃🍵🐢 Make Tea Plastic Free
More tea companies have begun to package their products in tea bags made from plastic — either nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A 2019 McGill University study found that a single one of these tea bags releases more than 11 billion microplastic and 3 billion nanoplastic particles when steeped in boiling water.
Tell tea companies that plastic is NOT your cup of tea and ask them to switch to completely plastic-free packaging.
Action 2
🌲🌴🌳 Governor Hochul: Save the Trees!
For New Yorkers, the crisis of deforestation is somewhat out of sight, out of mind, but it is the second largest contributor to the climate crisis, after fossil fuels. The good news is that, during this year’s session, the New York legislature passed the Tropical Deforestation-Free Procurement Act to protect forests across the world, such as the Amazon rainforest. This bill would change the state’s purchasing of forest products, like paper and wood for construction. The bill could change the whole industry.
However, Governor Kathy Hochul has not committed to signing this important legislation and enacting it into law, even though it passed the Senate and Assembly with large majorities! She has until the end of the year to take action, so let’s help her see it through. Please urge Governor Hochul to sign this important legislation to save trees to save our world!
Action 3
✋⛽🛑 Shut Down Line 5
Despite Enbridge’s terrible track record, the Line 5 oil pipeline continues to operate illegally through the Bad River Band’s land in Wisconsin and the Straits in Michigan. President Biden has pledged to protect constituents and honor indigenous sovereignty while pushing ambitious, vital climate goals. Let’s hold Biden to his promise: it’s time to #ShutDownLine5!
