Subject: our democracy depends on this

Hundreds of years of grassroots organizing led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act into law, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting 54 years ago today. This was a huge step forward for our democracy, but the 2016 election and the 2018 midterm elections proved beyond a doubt that modern-day voter suppression is alive and well, friends.

Hundreds of thousands of voters were purged from the rolls all over the country. People who had voted in every election they could were turned away on Election Day. Voices were silenced, and key elections that could have reshaped the entire fabric of our country were lost.

We can't look away from injustice, we must persist. If you agree that in America, every vote should count and every citizen should be able to cast their vote without fear of suppression and fraud, please add your name next to mine as a citizen co-sponsor of the Voting Rights Advancement Act.

The 2016 election was the first election in over 50 years that did not have the protection of the Voting Rights Act, after the Supreme Court ruled that states with the longest histories of voter discrimination didn't have to approve their voting changes with the federal government.

The wave of voter suppression that occurred in the wake of this ruling is heartbreaking and unforgivable. And now, Mitch McConnell is blocking key election security bills in the Senate, despite there being proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Russia interfered and hijacked the 2016 election.

I won't sit by and watch history repeat itself in 2020 because our democracy depends on every voice being heard.

I'm co-sponsoring the Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that were missing in 2016 and 2018. To help protect and strengthen the voting rights of all Americans, add your name today.
