Dear members and supporters,

Over the past couple months, we’ve reached out to many Palestinian members and allies to offer support and follow their lead on strategies to end the violence and genocide in Gaza. One way we are extending solidarity is by honoring the call from the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) Movement to boycott the UNFCCC-Conference of the Parties (COP28) this December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This means that for the first time in 15 years, we are canceling our delegation.

The UAE is the world’s seventh-largest oil extractor and the fifth-largest emitter of CO2, with a stark record of internationally recognized human rights abuses, including imprisonment of human rights defenders, and abuse of migrant workers. It is a major purchaser of Israeli surveillance technology, and as COP28 host, is providing Israel a global platform to conduct greenwashing while it commits genocide.

We call on climate and environmental organizations and our allies to join the COP28 boycott and demand a ceasefire now to stop Israel’s siege on Gaza and the genocide of Palestinian people. We also understand that no arena should be relinquished to power, so we ask allies who must attend to pledge to raise the ceasefire demand directly with governments, the UNFCCC, and civil society.

Please note that Saturday, December 9 — the United Nations International Day for the Prevention of Genocide — falls during COP28 and may present opportunities to participate in calling for a ceasefire and justice for Gaza.

We recognize that there is no climate justice without human rights, and there is no climate justice on occupied lands. Please join the COP28 boycott and pledge to demand an immediate ceasefire.

While we will not be on the ground at COP28, our work for climate justice and demilitarization continues. Thank you for your support and solidarity!

Durante los últimos dos meses, nos hemos contactado con muches miembros palestines y aliades para ofrecer apoyo y seguir su liderazgo respecto a estrategias para poner un fin a la violencia y genocidio en Gaza. Una forma en la que estamos ofreciendo nuestra solidaridad es honrando el pedido del Movimiento Boicotear, Desinvertir, Sancionar (BDS) de boicotear la Conferencia de las Partes de UNFCCC (COP28) este diciembre en Dubai, Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Esto quiere decir que por primera vez en 15 años, estamos cancelando nuestra delegación.

EAU es el séptimos mayor extractor de petróleo del mundo y el quinto mayor emitidor de CO2, con un crudo historial de abusos de derechos humanos reconocidos internacionalmente, incluyendo el encarcelamiento de defensores de derechos humanos y abuso de trabajadores migrantes. Es un comprador importante de tecnología de vigilancia israelí, y como anfitrión de COP28, le está proveyendo a Israel una plataforma global para llevar a cabo su lavado verde mientras comete genocidio.

Les pedimos a las organizaciones climáticas y mediambientales y a nuestres aliades que se unan al boicot de COP28 y exijan un alto al fuego ahora para frenar el asedio en Gaza y el genocidio del pueblo palestino. También entendemos que no deberíamos ceder ningún campo al poder, así que les pedimos a nuestres aliades que deben asistir que se comprometan a presentar la demanda de alto al fuego directamente con los gobiernos, la UNFCCC y la sociedad civil.

Por favor tomen nota de que el sábado 9 de diciembre — el Día Internacional de las Naciones Unidas por la Prevención del Genocidio — cae durante la COP28 y puede presentar oportunidades de participar en exigir un alto al fuego y justicia para Gaza.

Reconocemos que no hay justicia climática sin derechos humanos, y no hay justicia climática en tierras ocupadas. Por favor únanse al boicot de la COP28 y comprométanse a exigir un alto al fuego.
