Hi John,
The UN’s climate conference (COP28) begins tomorrow, and leaders from around the world will come together in what is now a race against time to limit global heating.

While some island states face their countries sinking within the century, our prime minister Rishi Sunak remains hell-bent on approving major oil and gas projects in the UK. It makes COP28 a vital moment for all of us in the UK to stand up and demand climate justice.

As well as world leaders and climate activists, thousands of fossil fuel lobbyists will also descend on COP28 and be given access to key negotiators. That’s why we’ll be busy making sure the climate justice movement shouts the loudest and demands governments take action to curb the fossil fuel industry’s climate-wrecking activities.

Here’s three things you can do right now on the major issues of the summit - including how to join the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice on Saturday 9 December.

** 1. Make polluters pay for climate damage
------------------------------------------------------------
At COP27 last year, rich countries finally agreed to a loss and damage fund to support countries in the global south repair the damage caused by the climate crisis.

Rishi Sunak is going to be at COP on Friday. There are reports that he’ll be announcing a UK contribution to this vital fund. Now is the time to make noise that we want the UK to commit new money to paying its fair share, and raise the funds by taxing climate-wrecking corporations. Will you add your name to our petition?
Yes, I demand that polluters pay for their climate damage ([link removed])
If properly set up and funded, the loss and damage fund could be a genuine step towards climate justice for communities who are being left to fight the most extreme climate disasters, which are caused mostly by rich countries’ addiction to fossil fuels.

** 2. End the fossil fuel era
------------------------------------------------------------
Scientists could not be clearer about fossil fuels: they are driving the climate crisis and pose a huge risk to humanity. COP28 could be a game changer for us all, but the fossil fuel industry will be there to delay and distract so that a few CEOs, shareholders and global elites can keep counting their millions.

Every single politician at COP28 needs to know that the public wants to see a plan for a fast and fair end to fossil fuels. A Fossil Fuel Treaty could do just that. Will you sign our letter to the UK’s party leaders asking them to endorse it?
Yes, I support a global exit plan from fossil fuels ([link removed])
Fossil fuels are destroying the planet. They’re already destroying lives. We urgently need world leaders to step up and make a plan for a fair global phase out.

** 3. Join the Global day of action for climate justice on 9 December
------------------------------------------------------------
Temperatures are rising. Corporate profits are rising. Now we’re rising.
We’ve seen the hottest summer on record. Our politicians are backtracking on their climate commitments. And we’ve got continued corporate profiteering fuelling the climate and cost of living crises. It’s time for us to take action.
As world leaders gather for the UN’s climate negotiations at COP28, a climate summit presided over by an oil executive, we’re coming together on Saturday 9 December to demand climate justice.

From Edinburgh to Plymouth, Belfast to Canterbury, dozens of actions are already being planned round the country. RSVP via the map above to get updates and info from your local event organiser. If you’re organising something locally – no matter how small – and it’s not yet listed on the map, share it now! Sharing your event will help promote it to other people in your area. Organisers can use the 9 December resource pack ([link removed]) to help you plan and promote your actions.

We’ve been working on an outreach leaflet which will present a strong and clear case for urgent and affordable climate action that will benefit everyone. Use this form ([link removed]) to order leaflets now for whatever action or flyering you're planning.

Wherever you are, bring your flags, banners, placards and get ready to show the world you stand for climate justice. Share updates and photos on the day using the hashtag #NowWeRise and tag @GlobalJusticeUK (so we can retweet!) You can also email your photos after the event to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

Every action we take matters. COP28 is an opportunity for the climate justice movement to make our demands heard.

We want a fair end to fossil fuels; we want polluters to pay reparations for the damage they’ve caused. We want to see an end to the escalation of climate disasters in the global south, and a liveable future for all.

In solidarity
