Can a machine tell that you're mad just by looking at your face? Do your emails give away how stressed you are? Could a computer understand your emotions better than you?

According to a wave of new startups, the answer to all of the above is a resounding yes. A raft of companies is trying to sell the idea that emotion artificial intelligence can pick up on subtle facial movements that we aren't even aware we're making, use those minuscule twitches to determine what we're feeling, and then turn those private feelings into quantifiable data. EAI, the developers claim, can pick apart the differences between emotions such as happiness, confusion, anger, and even sentimentality. In theory, this tech makes it possible for a computer to know our emotions — even if we don't know them ourselves.

For companies, EAI may be a gold mine. Being able to understand customers' genuine thoughts, feelings, and personalities would make it a lot easier for companies to sell their products. Imagine you're browsing on a shopping app and you don't like what you're seeing. With EAI, the app could tell in an instant and quickly serve up the kind of content that it thought would make you feel good — and be more likely to buy. Some businesses are already using the tech to make smart toys, robotics, vehicles, and empathetic AI chatbots. Beyond commercial uses, EAI could help companies in the workplace: Knowing the emotional state of a prospective or current employee can help companies make decisions that improve productivity and keep things humming along.

Opinion | We Know War Is Awful, So Why Is It Making a Comeback? -

The two bloodiest wars of the past two years have been results of tragic miscalculations. A third war, which has dominated the news lately, might also have been set in motion by a costly mistake, as I’ll explain. To economists, this raises a question: If wars are so awful, why do we keep blundering into them?

First, the data. The wars that cost the most lives in 2022 were in Ethiopia and Ukraine. Battle-related deaths exceeded 100,000 in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and 81,000 in Ukraine, according to the Peace Research Institute Oslo. Those conflicts drove battle-related deaths for the world as a whole to a 28-year high of 237,000, the institute says. Believe it or not, 2023 is peaceful by comparison.

The war that’s in the news now is the Hamas terror attack on Israelis on Oct. 7 and the Israel Defense Forces counterattack, which it says is necessary to root Hamas out of Gaza. Hamas murdered about 1,200 Israelis in the first attack. Nearly 400 Israeli soldiers, officers and reservists have been killed then and in subsequent fighting, according to the I.D.F. Gazan officials estimate that more than 14,000 people have died in the counterattack, of whom they say about 10,000 were women and children. (That’s a lower bound for the estimated number of civilian deaths.) There’s also been deadly fighting in the West Bank.

When Jennifer Watkins got a message from YouTube saying her channel was being shut down, she wasn’t initially worried. She didn’t use YouTube, after all.

Her 7-year-old twin sons, though, used a Samsung tablet logged into her Google account to watch content for children and to make YouTube videos of themselves doing silly dances. Few of the videos had more than five views. But the video that got Ms. Watkins in trouble, which one son made, was different.

Elon Musk's Neuralink raises more cash ahead of human trials next year - Business Insider

Elon Musk's controversial brain implant company Neuralink has raised more funding as it gears up to start human trials.

Neuralink has just collected a further $43 million, according to an SEC filing last week. The fresh funding brings the amount raised to more than $323 million, SEC filings show.

The latest round was led by billionaire investor Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, TechCrunch reported. A total of 32 investors contributed funds, per the filing.
