Dear Friend of CURE Epilepsy,

Meet 11-year-old Christiane Tsane, a competitive runner who has faced epilepsy since the age of six. Her initial absence seizures evolved into more severe tonic-clonic and focal seizures, yet she refuses to let epilepsy hinder her dreams.

Due to Christiane’s age, puberty has intensified her seizures, and they are not yet controlled. During one competition, as she was set to run the second leg of the 100-meter relay race, Christiane had two seizures, got up, and crushed the next race. Her dad is her coach, and her mom is her biggest cheerleader. With their support, she was one of the final eight runners in the 2021 Junior Olympics, ultimately finishing sixth in the country in the 100-meter competition.

“She got up, the 100 meter was going to start and she came in like nothing ever happened. People were looking at her like, “Okay, didn’t I just see this child on the ground?” She took off running.”

Epilepsy affects more people in the U.S. than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) combined, yet receives fewer federal dollars per patient than each of these. Just as Christiane refuses to give up on her dreams despite the challenges of epilepsy, we won't give up in the fight against epilepsy.
