I wanted to give you a quick update on COVID-19 (coronavirus). As of right now, according to the CDC, there have been 21 coronavirus cases reported here in Florida.

I want to assure you that monitoring the impact the virus has on our community is currently one of my top priorities. I am speaking regularly with local health officials to make sure they have the adequate resources required to prepare and respond, if needed. 

As a community, there are critical steps we can be taking to minimize and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Here are some preventative actions that will slow the spread of the disease:

• Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds each time
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• If you are sick, stay home

If you are experiencing symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately, especially if you have pre-existing respiratory issues or are elderly.

The symptoms of the coronavirus are:

• Coughing
• Fever
• Shortness of breath

It’s critical that we take this threat seriously in order to prevent the disease from spreading even further.

We just passed a funding bill in Congress to help local governments respond and develop a vaccine. I want to assure you that as South Florida’s representative, I’m taking this threat very seriously, and I will keep you informed as I learn more.
