Governor John Bel Edwards just announced that he has signed an executive order to declare a public health emergency in relation to coronavirus, or COVID19. We urge everybody to stay calm, wash their hands, and observe other necessary precautions to limit the spread of the virus ([link removed]) .

In other news, on Monday, the Louisiana legislative session kicked off at the State Capitol — and there are a number of bills that we believe cover topics that are worth fighting for in the legislature.

Firstly, this legislative session will see a number of bills focused on gender parity. Some of these topics include an equal pay package, a sales tax exemption for diapers and tampons, and a bill to improve the conditions in prison for pregnant women.

We will also see bills that affect our representation, like a bill to address prison gerrymandering, to ensure incarcerated individuals are counted in their home parish during the 2020 Census. And another that would allow all registered voters to vote by mail.

Our legislators are fighting to increase our state's minimum wage, which would help hardworking families across New Orleans make ends meet.

We are also fighting to lower our city's eviction rate; which is more than twice the national average. There is a bill that proposes edits to current eviction law to give individuals and families more time to pay their rent, before being forced out of their home.

There are so a number of bills we are fighting against, because they are not in the best interest of the children and families in our city. We will fight to ensure transgender children are allowed to play team sports, and that our renters have adequate protections to ensure their homes are safe for their families.
