My name is Amelia Perrin, and I’m AWHC’s investigations manager. I know you’ve been hearing a lot from us today, but I wanted to tell you about one of our programs that is close to my heart. Every single day, I come face-to-face with the deadly consequences of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Adoption Incentive Program. My team and I find and document the victims of this program in kill pens across the country and that’s why I am so grateful for your support of AWHC’s rescue fund. Thanks to your generosity, our rescue fund has been able to save mustangs and burros from the slaughter pipeline, provide lifesaving medical care to foals on Nevada’s Virginia Range, and help support the expansion and capacity of boots-on-the-ground rescues.

Today, I want to introduce you to some of the mustangs and burros we’ve saved this year, thanks to your support.

Most recently, our team was contacted directly by the US Forest Service (USFS) to help find homes for several recently-captured special needs horses from the Devil's Garden Wild Horse Territory in California. This came as an unexpected but welcome surprise, as horses like these are often immediately euthanized by the BLM once they’re captured.

Once we got word from the USFS about these horses in need, our partner organization, Montgomery Creek Ranch (MCR) stepped up to provide lifetime care for two mares, a 20-year-old with old scars around all four coronets, and an 11-year-old with a clubbed foot. MCR is providing these two sweet animals with the care that they need, with help from our Rescue Fund.

20 Year Old w/ Coronet ScarsThis year AWHC also rescued two beautiful mares from a notorious kill pen in Oklahoma. These two mares, who were days away from being shipped to slaughter, found refuge at our partner sanctuary, For the Love of Aria.

[link removed] [[link removed]] Photo by WilsonAxpe PhotoadvoacyWe also helped to rescue burros from the slaughter pipeline with our rescue fund, providing grants to help save a total of 32 BLM-branded burros over the course of the year, including: one sick and elderly burro, two BLM burros in a live Oregon slaughter auction, and seven burros in a California livestock auction.
