Mundi is Free, but What About Me?

Dear Friend,

My name is Joyce. I was born in Africa more than 40 years ago. When I was just a cub, my herd was slaughtered before my eyes. My friend, Mundi, and I were among a handful of elephants who survived. At the time, I thought we were lucky. I was wrong.

Mundi and I were separated. After being sold again and again, she was sent to a zoo in Puerto Rico where she spent almost her entire life in a small enclosure performing tricks for tourists. I also only lived a life of sadness and turmoil, working in the circus and other traveling shows.

With the help of generous friends like you, World Animal Protection helped support Mundi’s rescue. Today she is living a quiet and peaceful life at Elephant Refuge North America. She is free to roam and enjoy fresh air, she can play with other elephants and bask in the sun.

Mundi is free, but what about me?

For the past 13 years, I’ve been trapped at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. Six Flags Great Adventure might be a fun destination for humans, but it’s no place for an elephant like me.

More than two million people visit each year. Many take part in the “Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure” where loud vehicles and gaping strangers drive past animals like me. Once, a baboon was hit by a car and dragged. Her arm was severed, and she didn’t survive.

The New Jersey weather is not the proper climate for an elephant and my enclosure is nowhere near the size of the wild I used to roam. I long for green grass and wide-open spaces.
