Dear John: Before #GivingTuesday draws to a close, I wanted to reach out to you personally and ask that you please take a minute to show your support for the award-winning independent journalism of the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD). As the President of CMD’s board and its past executive director, I know how hard the CMD team works to dig behind the scenes so that you have the information you need to fight back against the special interests distorting our democracy.  This is CMD’s 30th Anniversary, and for the last three decades CMD has been exposing the Koch political machine, climate denial front groups, corporate pay-to-play operations like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA), and much, much more. |
Thanks to donors like you who have made our work possible, CMD has continued to punch above its weight again in 2023. So far this year we: - Blew the whistle on the Right’s “anti-ESG” campaign backed by Big Oil to block climate progress and manufacture a crisis around responsible investing under the guise of attacking “woke capitalism.”
- Shined a light on 50 years of harm caused by ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) and its long-running efforts to promote the legislative wish lists of Big Tobacco, the gun lobby, Big Oil, pharmaceutical giants, and right-wing fundamentalist groups opposed to abortion, racial diversity, and LGBTQ rights.
- Exposed the far-right’s dangerous campaign for a constitutional convention that would give delegates handpicked by GOP politicians supermajority control over proposing radical changes to the Constitution aimed at rolling back a century of progress on economic, racial, social, and environmental justice.
- Published over 70 original investigations revealing the Right’s attempts to crush local democracy, prevent urgent action on climate change, and pump dark money into our elections.
- Collaborated with Newsweek, The American Prospect, Grist, Common Dreams, The Progressive, and other media outlets to publish in-depth reports and opinion pieces, significantly growing CMD’s impact and reaching tens of thousands of new readers.
That’s why I’m reaching out to you now—on CMD’s 30th birthday—to ask that you please support our in-depth investigations into hidden corporate influence, anti-democratic extremists, and dark money. There’s so much more to be done in 2024, especially with a presidential election just around the corner that promises to set a dark money spending record. Our democracy is hanging in the balance, and CMD is expert at exposing those seeking to capture or undermine core institutions to advance a repressive agenda.
