TAKE ACTION:
Tell Mayor Bowser and the City Council to fund critical gun violence interventions!

John–

Washington, DC, is facing a gun violence crisis. The District has one of the highest rates of gun homicides in the US, nearly three times the national rate. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the District. And while Black residents account for 51% of DC’s population, they account for approximately 96 percent of the city's gun homicide victims.

That's why Moms Demand Action volunteers are calling on Mayor Bowser and the City Council to make a substantial and long-term commitment to fund a comprehensive strategy that will help the communities most affected by gun violence. This includes violence intervention and prevention programs which are proven to drastically reduce gun violence in the District.

The city currently has a budget surplus and the amount of money necessary for these programs is miniscule compared to the health care, law enforcement, and criminal justice costs associated with gun violence in the city. The financial burden on the district does not even begin to capture the toll of the lives lost, nor does it account for the effect on local communities, which are often torn apart as a result of gun violence.

Mayor Bowser should authorize this emergency life-saving funding now with the support of the city council.

The deadline to secure this funding in the upcoming budget is rapidly approaching, so they need to hear from us now: Send a message to Mayor Bowser and the City Council urging them to prioritize gun safety in the city budget!
