Hi John,

I’ve been thinking a lot about the implications Trump’s 2021 budget will have on our families and students.

Right now, 45 million Americans carry a total of $1.6 trillion and counting in student loan debt, with Pennsylvania grads having the highest amounts of student debt. And I keep hearing similar stories from families all over the southeast region.

You might be familiar with it: Parents are so proud of their kid for being accepted into really great schools but can’t afford their top choice because it’s out of the budget -- mainly because the parents are still struggling to pay off their own student loans.

Our federal student loan system is broken -- and we need to fix it.

Unfortunately, Trump’s 2021 budget is a debt sentence for students. It lays out $5.6 billion in cuts to the Department of Education’s already too small budget and, if passed, will end the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program despite its success.

In Congress, I will continue fighting to lessen the burden brought on by overwhelming amounts of student loan debt. I’ve introduced the Justice For Student Borrower’s Act to protect borrowers from confusing and predatory agreements.

We have important fights ahead of us to ensure our families and our students are set up to succeed -- I’m glad you’re in this fight with us.

Thank you for all that you do.

-Mary Gay
