Dear Friend of CURE Epilepsy,
An epilepsy diagnosis was only the beginning of the journey for Kate Neale Cooper and her daughter, Virginia. From Virginia’s diagnosis at 17 months old, it took more than 16 years of medications, dietary trials, and brain scans, all while Virginia dealt with daily seizures.

A drastic suggestion came during her junior year of high school: drill holes into her brain to confirm if surgery would help. After the first attempt failed, Kate sought a second opinion. The second round meant drilling deeper into Virginia’s brain. It was a tough decision for a teenager applying for college. Virginia received her first college acceptance letter on her phone while waiting to be wheeled into the operating room again. Upon waking up, she was not only a new college student but also a surgery candidate—and has been seizure-free since December 2020.
