These are my parents, Ed and Sherry.

I want to take a moment to explain the values and principles that my
parents instilled in me throughout my life.

My parents taught me so much – that public service was a noble calling and
one that could bring meaningful change.

It’s why I first joined the Department of Justice and why I first ran for
office. I wanted to deliver for my community and country and make a
difference.

Their support and encouragement have helped me get to this point today.

You see, growing up, my parents surrounded my brother and me with books
and records, with frequent conversations about topics from history to
politics. Sitting around the dinner table at night, our family would talk
about the news of the day or the history book my father was reading at the
moment.

The conversations were always dynamic — my dad comes from a long line of
Democrats, and my mom from a long line of Republicans (in fact, her father
was a Republican county chairman at one point, so you can imagine the
discourse at larger family gatherings!).

To this day, my father, now almost 96, continues to love talking politics
(and has a few choice words for the former president).

The values instilled by my parents are the values I hope I’ve instilled in
my children too: To stand up for what you believe in and against bullies.
To be understanding and thoughtful, to help others whenever you can, and
to listen and learn.

My parents taught me that honesty really matters. That truth matters, that
decency matters, and that our democracy matters. And it’s up to each one
of us to use the skills we have to fight for them.

And that’s why I’m asking you today:
