Happy Giving Tuesday, John! I joined FairVote in 2017 to be part of the change our democracy so desperately needs. As part of my reporting for my book Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count on the most extreme partisan gerrymanders in our nation’s history – an eight-figure, precision-targeted scheme to rewire state legislatures and congressional maps nationwide – I realized this organization had the most persuasive solutions. FairVote pushed forward on the strength of its ideas and a commitment to better elections for all, a far cry from the cynicism and fancy corner offices along Washington, D.C.’s K Street. Since then, I have witnessed FairVote and our movement’s growth on every front, whether winning statewide ballot measures, quintupling the number of places using ranked choice voting, garnering new allies and support in the pages of the New York Times and Washington Post, and growing this team to the size and skill it contains today. FairVote has thrived thanks to our supporters, who make this crucial work sustainable through their giving. Those of us concerned about the future of our democracy have much to doubt and despair. Yet, FairVote and our movement offer another way forward – one where, with hard work and the right resources, we deliver change and victories that empower voters, build trust, and ensure our republic lives up to its potential.
