Dear John,

On October 26, 2023, the movement for reproductive health, rights, and justice lost one of its leading lights with the sudden passing of NIRH and NIRH Action Fund President Andrea Miller.

This Giving Tuesday, we wanted to share with you her thoughts — her last letter to NIRH’s many supporters — and to highlight some of our work this past year.

We will continue to fight for Andrea’s vision, one we share and will continue to work towards in the year ahead. Please consider making a Giving Tuesday donation to NIRH [[link removed]] or the NIRH Action Fund [[link removed]] before midnight to make that vision a reality.

With gratitude,
NIRH and NIRH Action Fund

In the year and a half since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , its decision has been both devastating in its impact and galvanizing for policymakers and the public. Even as politicians in states like Florida and North Carolina are doing everything they can to ban abortion, lawmakers, advocates, and individuals across the country are pushing hard to ensure everyone has access to the care they need—and the result is important wins at the state and, especially, local levels.

NIRH has been at the forefront of these efforts, working side by side with groups on the ground to secure policies that directly impact people’s lives. For example, when we first began fighting for local funding for abortion care—back in 2018 in New York City—we knew it would be a lifeline for those who couldn’t otherwise access these services. What we didn’t know was how quickly this strategy would be adopted across the country. Today, 19 local governments are investing millions of dollars in local abortion funds or practical support groups. And states are joining in as well, with seven adding hundreds of millions of dollars to fund abortion care, reproductive health services and infrastructure, and practical support since the Supreme Court ruling.

These investments are critical. New research shows that, despite all the restrictions that are being passed, people are still getting abortions—even if it means traveling long distances, spending thousands of dollars, or risking punishment by their state.

Securing wins in places as far flung as Los Angeles, CA, and Cuyahoga County, OH, eases the burden for those who can’t afford the cost of care. Just as importantly, it sends a message.

As the NIRH Action Fund gears up for the elections ahead, these shows of strength and support will inspire people who believe in reproductive freedom to run and to vote, as well as stiffen the spines of elected officials who have been too scared to stand up for what is right.

With your continued support, NIRH and NIRH Action Fund will take up the challenges of the years ahead. More importantly, we will be prepared to seize this opportunity by pursuing strategies and policies to ensure that no one is left behind—so that everyone has the right, opportunity, and support to access the reproductive health care they need. Your gift, today, will help make that vision a reality [[link removed]] . Thank you.

In solidarity,
Andrea Miller
