John,
Late yesterday, the House took a major step towards repairing itself.
In an overwhelming 395-13 vote, members from both parties passed House Resolution 756, the Moving Our Democracy and Congressional Operations Towards Modernizing Resolution, which adopted nearly 30 bipartisan recommendations by the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress to make sure the body functions well and is accountable to voters.
Not only does this resolution prove that bipartisan reform is possible, it also shows a commitment from Congress to bring itself into the 21st century and ensure a legislative branch that is effective and efficient in its work for the American people.
The resolution advances such measures as creating a diversity office, improving staff retention, increasing constituent outreach to citizens, and making Congress more transparent — all essential to restoring the people’s trust in the people’s House.
Issue One played a critical role in establishing the select committee, and applauds its efforts thus far. We will continue to support the committee’s work to improve how Congress functions.
Thanks for all you do,
Meredith McGehee Executive Director, Issue One
