This is Kibby, another one of the ASAN pups, reporting from my favorite patch of grass on behalf of the ASANimals this #GivingTuesday! Today is the day when people from all over the world show their support for the causes that matter to them. And the ASAN humans definitely matter to me — they’re the ones that do the petting and keep the treats! Because of your support last Giving Tuesday and all year long, ASAN has been able to continue working towards the full inclusion of autistic people through their programs, their publications, and their policy advocacy. They’re determined to continue the fight — can they count on you to join us?
Because of your support this year, ASAN:
-
Released new Easy Read and plain language resources on topics like Long-COVID, safer sex, structural racism, and more.
-
Released “Bienvenidos a la Comunidad Autista,” the Spanish translation of our introductory toolkit to autism and autistic self-advocacy.
-
Continued the fight to #StopTheShock.
-
Fought against budget cuts that would have slashed funding to critical programs for people with disabilities, and proposed restrictions on telemedicine.
-
Endorsed two laws that would help immigrants access important social safety net programs like Medicaid and SNAP: the Health Equity and Access Under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Families Act and the LIFT the BAR Act.
-
Worked with the Policy and Analytics Center (PAC) based at A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel University to hold the Autism Research for Us symposium.
-
Submitted public comments to the IACC to push the IACC to advocate for research that matters to our community, and encouraged our grassroots to do the same.
-
In coalition with other disability organizations, successfully urged HHS to designate people with disabilities as a population experiencing health disparities for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research.
-
Trained 18 advocates through the Autism Campus Inclusion (ACI) Leadership Academy.
-
Hosted a two-day training on the HCBS Setting Rule alongside our updated resource, “This Rule Rules!”
-
And so much more!
Giving Tuesday is a day where everyone can make a difference! Join ASAN to support advocacy by autistic people for autistic people. Will you help our humans support self advocacy?
Another way to have a pawsitive impact on ASAN today is through a Facebook fundraiser! They’re easy to set up and share with your friends, and you don’t have to contribute yourself if you’re not able to.
ASAN also has an assortment of holiday merch in our shop. With holiday cards, warm sweaters, and all sorts of gifts, there is something for everyone on your list! It’s a great way to support ASAN while showing your autistic pride. I can promise personally that many dogs love to sleep on the fancy pillows.
We the ASANimals do our best to keep up our humans’ morale as they fight for a world in which people with disabilities are included, valued, and empowered to make their own decisions. This Giving Tuesday, I hope ASAN can count on your support for self advocacy. Your support enables us to make sure all people with disabilities have the tools we need to make our voices heard.
With gratitude,
Kibby
