Indivisibles --
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza right now cannot be overstated.
1.7 million Gazans have been displaced by the Israeli government’s
military response to the horrific Hamas attacks on October 7. Over half of
all housing units have been destroyed or damaged. The territory’s fragile
sewage system has all but collapsed, sparking fears of epidemics at a time
when medicine is in short supply and the hospitals that remain open are
already overrun with patients wounded by Israel’s unprecedented bombing
campaign.
Gaza also faces shortages of food, water, and fuel -- the lack of fuel
making it difficult to distribute or prepare what little food aid is
entering.
The temporary truce reached last Friday resulted, at long last, in the
release of dozens of Israeli and international hostages and the largest
transfers of aid into Gaza since early October. But it’s not enough -- and
it’s not clear how long the current pause will last.
As we continue to organize for a ceasefire to end the bloodshed, it’s
vital we also support lifesaving assistance to the people of Gaza.
[ [link removed] ]Which is why, this Giving Tuesday, we are asking you to donate what you
can to UNRWA -- the UN agency leading the humanitarian response on the
ground.
UNRWA has long been an essential lifeline to the people of Gaza, running
schools, medical clinics, counseling services, humanitarian assistance,
and economic support throughout the territory (in addition to supporting
Palestinian refugees across the Middle East).
Right now, its services are more urgently needed than ever. At this
moment, one million people are sheltering in UNRWA installations. Tens of
thousands of people are counting on the agency for medical care at the
nine health centers still functioning and the over 100 mobile units it is
operating. The agency is working with the World Food Program to stave off
the very real threat of starvation. Last Friday, UNRWA delivered a convoy
of aid to shelters in the north of Gaza -- the first in over a month.
UNRWA estimates it will need almost a half billion dollars to cover the
most critical needs of Gaza’s population in the next few months. Some of
that funding will come from governments and other NGOs, but in the short
term, millions will be needed from individual donors -- and each of us can
make a difference.

In solidarity,

P.S. Whether or not you are able to give today, you can help ease this
humanitarian crisis by continuing to build pressure for a ceasefire. It’s
the only path forward for ending the unprecedented killing in Gaza,
ensuring the safe delivery of aid, and bringing each and every hostage
home. [ [link removed] ]Ask your senators to support a ceasefire here. [ [link removed] ]Ask your
representative to do so here.
