Earlier this year, American Oversight filed a lawsuit in Louisiana to uncover the truth behind the state’s sudden withdrawal from ERIC — the Electronic Registration Information Center — a nonprofit group founded in 2012 by a bipartisan group of state election officials to maintain more accurate voter rolls and detect possible double voting. ERIC also helps states reach out to eligible but unregistered individuals with information on how to register to vote.
ERIC has recently been at the center of baseless right-wing conspiracy theories regarding the organization’s funding and mission. Louisiana was the first state to pull out of ERIC, followed by eight other conservative-led states — all with no viable alternative for maintaining voter rolls and identifying eligible but unregistered voters. American Oversight is working to uncover the motivations behind withdrawal from ERIC and the risks for election administration.
