Lonnie Mosely, who was a 23-year-old flying from Duxford—now home to the American Air Museum—when he was shot down over Nazi-occupied France on July 4, 1944. Moseley avoided capture for weeks before being rescued and returning to Duxford, where he told fellow airmen about his, “One hell of a way to spend the 4th of July!”

Jack ReVelle, whose job as a US Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer included disarming a thermonuclear bomb after it smashed into a North Carolina field due to a B-52 crash. Had the bomb exploded, Jack estimated it would have had a 100% kill radius of 17 miles.

Lee Carson left college at age 16 to become a reporter and served as a War Correspondent for the International News Service starting in 1943. Carson rode in jeeps with the US Army, reported on French resistance to the Nazi occupation, and filed reports on the Battle of the Bulge. She was a tremendous storyteller whose story lives on at our museum.
