** American newsrooms often botch crime coverage. Here's a fix.
------------------------------------------------------------

When it comes to crime coverage in American newsrooms, Kelly McBride is brutally honest.
"As journalists, we are disingenuous about why we cover crime," she said in a recent Q&A ([link removed]) . "We tell ourselves that we cover it so that the public can keep itself safe. And yet the information that we give them doesn’t help anybody keep themselves safe."
She said there's a huge disconnect between journalists' reasoning for covering crime and how we actually cover it.
"That disconnect makes journalism part of the problem when it comes to reforming our criminal justice system, when journalism really should be part of the solution."
This week, Poynter launched its latest version of Transforming Crime Coverage Into Public Safety Journalism ([link removed]) , a 24-week virtual seminar that helps newsrooms transform the way they cover police and public safety in their communities.
Newsroom teams will be asked to reimagine their work and impact, and craft a strategy that not only elevates their newsroom's public safety reporting, but better serves their audience.
Read below for more information on applying to this and other strategic training opportunities.

How Any Journalist Can Earn Trust
Self-directed course, start any time
We have to stop assuming people understand the mission, ethics and processes behind our work in journalism. We can’t let ourselves get lumped in with perceptions of “the media.” Instead, we need to actively work to earn trust from our communities by telling them why we’re worthy of their time, trust and support.
This online, self-directed course, developed in partnership with our friends at Trusting News, ([link removed]) will help you understand mistrust and gain a better understanding of what trust in news looks like around the world. Examples and activities are designed for non-U.S. news media and fact-checking organizations, in collaboration with Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network. If you are based in the U.S., check out this version ([link removed]) instead.
Cost: Free.
