Dear Press Freedom Supporter,

Every day, when we wake up, we seek information. From weather and
traffic reports to news of political developments at home and abroad
to whether our favorite sports team has finally won, we turn to
journalists for the information we need for our daily lives.

The task of gathering the news and sharing it with us shouldn't
be controversial, yet in more places and in more ways than ever
before, the free flow of information is being stifled.

Multiple, large-scale, successive crises have exacerbated an already
perilous landscape for reporters worldwide. From Afghanistan to Iran
to Ukraine, CPJ has been there to support journalists at risk: since
2020, our support for journalists forced to relocate has grown by
227%. In the same timeframe, our financial assistance for emergency
grants to journalists has doubled.

Now, the Israel-Gaza war introduces a new, devastating landscape for
the media: it is the most dangerous conflict for journalists CPJ has
ever documented. As we disperse safety guidance, offer one-on-one
safety consultations, and prepare to address the needs of journalists
in the long term, we are also actively documenting press freedom
violations-journalists killed, detained, missing, and
attacked.
