Dear Friend,

I would like you to meet Alex.* He is nine years old. He and his mother Marie just arrived in Boston from Haiti, by way of Mexico. They now live in one of the emergency shelters that I'm sure you've read about in the news. They’ve actually lived in several shelters before landing in the current one.

Marie is strong, determined, and kind. She loves Alex very much. Several months ago, Marie left her home in Haiti with her child in her arms. She left a situation where her future was uncertain, for a new home where her son’s future would be unlimited.

I met Marie earlier this month, when Rian’s team of attorneys ran a legal clinic at this motel to sign adults up for work authorization. The conditions are cramped. This place is bursting with many parents, and their children, determined to join us as our neighbors and friends, yet uncertain as to how to proceed.

Unfortunately, every agency, state, and nonprofit are stretched so thin, that our focus remains on work authorization for the adults. This leaves children like Alex without documentation that they are already eligible for. Fortunately, there is something we can do about this. And this is where we need your help.

A gift today will help us at Rian Immigrant Center increase our capacity to serve more families in emergency shelters with critical legal services.

We all know that parents like Marie juggle multiple problems every day, because life doesn’t bring just one challenge at a time. So too must our human services adapt to help the whole person, and the whole family.

Donations made today for GivingTuesday will be matched up to $50,000 by the Schooner Foundation. Give today, and we can help families like Alex and Marie build a future that is truly unlimited.

Sincerely,

Jacob D. Bombard
