In Kenya, 31% of 19-year-old girls are mothers(1). It’s common for young mothers to fall out of education and employment. Without the means to earn a stable income, they must rely on others for financial security. This can leave young mothers vulnerable to physical and sexual violence at home or in exploitative work environments.
Our grassroots partner, Polycom, offers a whole host of services that teenage mothers can access to regain control of their lives. Whether it’s counselling, mentorship on sexual health rights, grants to continue education, or gaining vocational skills - teenage mums come to Polycom when it feels like every other door is shutting in their face.
When COVID hit and schools closed, many young women dropped out of sight. And when the schools reopened, they didn’t return. But Polycom was there. They went out to find and mentor missing girls.
