Two of the most infamous MAGA Republicans right now, Speaker Mike Johnson and Attorney General Lynn Fitch, rose to power within our target region of the Deep South.
Mike Johnson, who has numerous extreme positions on LGBTQ+ rights, abortion rights, and the separation of church and state, represents Louisiana in Congress.
Lynn Fitch, known as the “woman who ended Roe” is Mississippi’s Attorney General.
Both Louisiana and Mississippi are states thought of as “deep red,” but if GOP-led voter suppression is taken out of the equation, they have the potential to be battleground states.
Our point: If we invest in local progressive organizing in the Deep South, dangerous Republicans like them would never hold positions of power.
