The House just posted an official Hearing Notice from Rep. Jodey Arrington’s Committee on the Budget:

That’s right: This Wednesday, the House is meeting to examine the need for a “Fiscal Commission.” In all three bills Arrington highlights in the Hearing Notice, the purpose of the commission is to convene behind closed doors to cut Social Security and Medicare.

The Biden White House correctly called such a commission a “Death panel for Medicare and Social Security.” But that hasn’t stopped Republican ideologues like Arrington and Speaker Mike Johnson, who made convening a closed-door commission “immediately” the centerpiece of his first speech after winning the Speakership.

This hearing is a precursor to Speaker Johnson’s dream commission―and whether or not that commission is successful will be determined by whether they can get buy-in from Democratic politicians.
