I had served as a foster parent for years before I met my boys. I always volunteered to take in the older kids because I knew they were harder to place. When Robert came into my care, I soon learned his little brother was due to be adopted by another family – meaning the brothers would be permanently separated.
I decided I couldn’t let that happen. They had already lost so much, they couldn’t lose each other, too.
For months I fought like hell to stop the adoption and keep them together. Parker was allowed to join his big brother in my foster care, and I decided to formally adopt them so they would never be separated again.
But our adoption could’ve been impossible just a few years earlier. It’s only been 10 years since the right for LGBTQ+ adoption was recognized under federal law. Even today, 12 states have laws on the books that allow adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples or LGBTQ single parent adoptions.
If Republicans keep the House majority and take control of the Senate next year, this is just one of many rights we take for granted that could be rolled back. I’m running to flip ID-02 to protect the progress we’ve already made, and fight for EVERYONE’S freedoms.
