With accomplishments including 25 million lives saved, 5.5 million children protected from HIV infection, 340,000 health care workers trained, and more than 20 million people treated with antiretroviral treatment, PEPFAR (the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) is globally renowned as one of the biggest and most successful public health programs in history.

However, long-term legislation by Congress to maintain and fund the program remains unsettled, and advocates warn about the global impacts of underfunding or defunding the program.

Join Health Affairs and the Society for Health Policy Young Professionals (SHPYP) for a discussion with Dr. Tom Kenyon, former Principal Deputy Global AIDS Coordinator and Chief Medical Officer for PEPFAR and former Director, Center for Global Health at the CDC, to discuss why PEPFAR is important, the broad scope of the program, and risks and threats that policy makers should consider when making future decisions.

Dr. Kenyon is currently the Chief Health Officer for Project HOPE, the global health and humanitarian organization that publishes Health Affairs.

The centerpiece of the Health Affairs Insider Journal Club meeting in December is, “Substantial Disparities In COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake And Unmet Immunization Demand In Low- And Middle-Income Countries.”

Ashley M. Fox and coauthors used global survey data from 15,696 respondents across seventeen Western Pacific and African countries, between May 2022 and January 2023, and found that a number of low- and middle-income countries still do not have adequate accessibility to mRNA vaccines and have high unmet demand.

The authors conclude that targeted efforts to address barriers to vaccine access and ensure the accessibility and distribution of mRNA vaccines, as well as overcoming vaccine hesitancy, are critical in reducing unmet immunization demand and achieving higher vaccination rates across different regions.

On December 19, please join author Ashley Fox, an associate professor at the University at Albany SUNY, for a detailed discussion of the paper’s data, methods, and policy implications. Health Affairs Senior Editor Margaret Saunders will host.
