Dear John,

As we gear up for Giving Tuesday ([link removed]) —an occasion dedicated to supporting impactful organizations—I’m thrilled to share a story that epitomizes the life-altering impact of our work at ARC. In the lead-up to this day of giving back ([link removed]) , I’m excited to share a story about one of our ARC Members turned ARC staff that highlights what your generous support ([link removed]) allows us to achieve.

I’m proud to introduce Joseph Osorio, whose journey embodies the very essence of ARC’s belief that those closest to the issues are closest to the solutions. Joseph was first introduced to ARC when he was incarcerated and a participant in our Hope and Redemption Team (HART) program. Now? He serves as ARC’s Northern Regional Manager for HART.

Your support provides formerly incarcerated people with careers that allow them to help currently incarcerated people come home. ([link removed])

ARC’s HART program is a one-of-its-kind program where former lifers (people who served life sentences) go back inside California state prisons and provide rehabilitative programming to current lifers. This initiative provides formerly incarcerated people with careers, expands inside programming to California’s carceral system, and promotes trust between currently incarcerated people and the ARC staff helping them.

Joseph was sentenced to 28 years at the age of 17 and subsequently spent over 18 years in prison. His experience with his dedicated HART Life Coaches, J’mel Carter and Cesar Zuniga, ignited the belief in a life beyond bars and in the power of second chances. Through our advocacy efforts, Joseph was able to come home. In 2013, ARC helped pass SB 260, which allowed individuals who were tried as adults when they were under the age of 18 to be granted eligibility to go up in front of a parole board. Due to SB260, Joseph was found suitable for release and earned his freedom.

John, your dollars help bring people home. ([link removed])

“The belief that I can contribute to my community. To be able to walk out of prison and meet people who didn’t know me and provide me with housing and resources was huge! That helped break down the stigma of what I believed it would be like when I came home. Coming into ARC and being welcomed with open arms definitely helped project me right into the next step.”
-Joseph Osorio

Once Joseph was released, he became an ARC Member, going through our programming and cementing himself as an integral part of our community. He then made the unlikely decision to return to prison, this time as a Life Coach on our HART team. Joseph firmly believes in passing on the torch of hope and redemption. His tireless efforts within our organization have been instrumental in propelling our mission to end mass incarceration and his gratitude for freedom fuels his dedication, inspiring others to find redemption and a fresh start.

“I am thankful for my freedom. And the trust they have placed in me to allow me to work in these positions and to do the work we do inside and out. I would not be where I am right now without ARC”
-Joseph Osorio

Joseph stands as a testament to transformation and the unwavering belief in rehabilitation. His journey shines as a guiding light for our HART participants and Members, inspiring them on their path toward societal reintegration. His story is poignant, but it is not unique. Over 80% of ARC staff are formerly incarcerated and fight for those impacted by our criminal legal system everyday. All of our staff, including Joseph, underscore the power of second chances, offering a glimpse into the potential for transformation and growth in every individual.

John, your support fuels our ability to bring people home, to offer them opportunities to give back, and to make our communities stronger and safer. ([link removed]) Together, we can impact the lives of those seeking redemption and a second chance at a better life. Thank you for considering giving back to ARC, making stories of resilience and transformation possible.

Sincerely,

Sam Lewis
