My name’s Patrick, and I wasn’t always an animal advocate. A few years ago, I was just a person who had recently adopted a cat, taken up bird watching as a hobby, and spent time with livestock animals in upstate New York.
It sounds simple, but it’s true. Hearing my cat, Leonard, meow—and understanding what he wants (usually, play time). Seeing him greet us at the door, without fail, when we come home. Listening to birds talk in the trees. Experiencing firsthand the gentle, social nature of cows. It all made me realize that animals have their own lives, feelings, and experiences of the world.
In today’s hellish factory farms, animals aren’t treated as the intelligent, emotive beings I know they are. They’re treated as commodities, subjected to the worst cruelties imaginable—all in the name of profit. Once my eyes were opened to this brutality, I knew I could never look away.
One more thing. I chose to match gifts to The Humane League for a reason: THL gets results. Their work is making life better for a massive number of animals—and I trust them to stretch my dollars as far as they possibly can. Their passion and their dedication give me hope that we will one day live in a world without factory farming.
Do you imagine that world too?
For the animals,
