A group of Israeli women serving as commanders in the armored corps of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) played a crucial role in saving two communities near Gaza during the Hamas attack on October 7. The story of their heroism was recently featured on Israeli television.
As reported during a visit to the agricultural community of Yated near the Egyptian and Gaza borders, Yated was spared the worst of the October 7 carnage. A female tank commander from a nearby base, vigilant and quick-thinking, decided to engage a group of Hamas terrorists near the community. She successfully neutralized most of them, and although a few persisted, others fled back to Gaza and did not return.
While some social media commenters initially questioned the authenticity of the event, Israel’s Channel 12 reported the incident. Traditionally, female officers in the IDF serve in instructional or logistical roles, but an increasing number are being accepted into combat units, including infantry, armored corps, and aviation roles.
In the current conflict, women are actively participating in combat roles inside Gaza, serving in mixed male-female units.
