Dear John,
As someone who follows and supports CGS, you understand that protecting a fair and inclusive future means keeping heritable genome editing off limits. That’s why the news of the first two genetically modified “CRISPR babies” – on this day five years ago – was so horrifying. The wildly unethical escapade put at risk not just these babies' health, but the prospects for our collective future.
People around the world reacted with outrage and concern, and CGS jumped into action with a civil society sign-on letter calling for a global prohibition on heritable genome editing.
Since then, we’ve intensified our efforts to build a genetically just future.
-
We’ve kept you up to date on key developments: from the discovery that CRISPR causes “chromosomal mayhem” in human embryos to the antics of techno-elites who embrace the label “hipster eugenics” as they promote genetic testing of IVF embryos for intelligence.
-
We've published groundbreaking research demonstrating that 70 countries already prohibit heritable genome editing – and that none explicitly permit it. Our findings overturned previous assumptions about the “Global Policy Landscape.”
-
And we’ve organized. Our Missing Voices Initiative brings social justice and human rights voices and perspectives front and center in public and policy discussions about heritable genome editing.
As we mark this anniversary, we are clear about the challenges ahead and energized by our amazing colleagues and supporters, like you.
Will you join the fight for genetic justice?
