Switching from an unhealthy to a healthy diet in middle age could add almost a decade to a person's life, a new study suggests.

The study, published Monday in Nature Food, was based on a model used to estimate how lifestyle changes could affect a person's life expectancy, and used data on 467,354 participants from the UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing genetic and health information on half a million UK participants.

The model found that people in their 40s who switched their unhealthy diet to a longevity-associated diet could add around 10 years to their life expectancy. The change was associated with an extra 10.8 years for women and 10.4 years for men.

One of the hottest markets in hedge funds is one of the hottest places, temperature-wise, in the world.

The Middle East, especially Dubai, has become a magnet for hedge funds recently, with firms like Millennium and ExodusPoint setting up outposts and Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio purchasing a penthouse in the city.

There are plenty of reasons investing talent is flocking to the region. For portfolio managers previously based in Europe or Singapore, locales like Dubai offer both a personal tax haven and a ripe investing environment. For founders, proximity to some of the largest institutional investors in the world is a big selling point. And the performance of those on the ground in the Middle East — and investing in the region — has been strong.

It has been a bumpy few weeks for carmakers who sell electric vehicles, which are moving more slowly off the lot than they were earlier this year. What’s going on? It seems that American drivers may be more hesitant about E.V.s than automakers expected.

I am familiar with trepidation about electric vehicles; I hear it when I give talks around the country about how each of us can take small steps to slow and stop climate change, when I chat with my neighbors and when I go on a road trip in my own E.V. Some people worry about running out of battery power far from a charging station; others are dissuaded by the upfront costs. The electric Volkswagen ID. 4, for example, sells for about $40,000, while the similarly sized, gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan sells for about $30,000 — though the E.V. has a lower total cost over the life of the car.

Those concerns will likely diminish in 2024 as money from the Inflation Reduction Act flows into building more charging stations and making discounts for electric vehicles available right at the dealership. But I think something else may explain why so many Americans, including those who consider themselves climate conscious, have been hesitant to buy an electric vehicle. It’s a fear that such vehicles aren’t really all that much better for the environment than hybrid vehicles that have both gas and electric motors, and might even be worse, because of everything required to manufacture batteries and mine the materials that go into them. This worry is keeping some would-be buyers on the sidelines of the E.V. revolution.

The pumpkin, which is a type of squash, is native to the Americas and was farmed by Indigenous communities “long before the arrival of Europeans,” Ms. Bex, who is Navajo, said.

And there are big benefits to their lasting popularity, she added. They are packed with nutrients like vitamins, minerals and fiber.
