Happy World Sustainable Transport Day! Let's dust off our bikes, share the car, get on board, get walking and wheeling. 26 November.

It's World Sustainable Transport Day!

Happy World Sustainable Transport Day

Yes, the UN has declared today, 26 November, the first ever World Sustainable Transport Day.

Around the world, transport is responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, so it's great that the UN is highlighting the importance of green transport such as buses, trains and trams, walking and cycling, and shared transport.

Here are three things you could do today, to mark this special day...

  1. Share what's great about sustainable transport on social media. Check out our profile on X, Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn and share one of our #WorldSustainableTransportDay posts.
  2. Make a journey by bus or train, by bike or on foot. Why not take a friend or family member along, who isn't so familiar with that mode? I know, in many places that's easier said than done - you might have no railway station or bus service, or it might not run on a Sunday, which takes me to point 3...
  3. Sign our letter to Mark Harper, the UK's Secretary of State for Transport. On World Sustainable Transport Day, the letter calls on him to improve sustainable transport at home and across borders. Among other things, the letter calls for an International Rail Strategy, to help us travel the world whilst also caring for it.

Thank you! Now for some information about two events that Campaign for Better Transport is running in the coming months...

50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

To round off our 50th anniversary year, we are thrilled to be hosting an anniversary gala at the iconic London Transport Museum. Following a three-course dinner with speakers and entertainment, our special guests will have exclusive access to the museum galleries, where they can wander among red Routemaster buses, early tube carriages and original Metropolitan trains, all while enjoying a glass of wine and good company.

Our fundraising gala will celebrate the sustainable transport community and our contribution to it over the past 50 years. It will be an opportunity to look back on our beginnings as a small but mighty campaign group. With the help of our generous sponsors and supporters we will carry out our work into the future.

Campaign for Better Transport’s 50th anniversary gala will be held on Thursday 8th February 2024, a limited number of individual tickets are available to buy for £250.

Our free webinar

If you haven't already, please also consider signing up to attend our free webinar. It will be a discussion of the ongoing work happening at Campaign for Better Transport.

Date: Thursday 7 December 2023
Time: 12:30 – 13:30

You’ll hear from our Director of External Affairs, The Rt Hon Norman Baker, and Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Research, as well as from me.

Thanks to your support, Campaign for Better Transport has built up significant momentum. We are influencing the Government to prioritise public transport, and we are winning important campaigns such as getting bus fares capped at £2 until at least 2024. You will hear more about our work through the event.

All the very best
