I love so many things about living in the United States, but going to the Department of Motor Vehicles isn’t one of them. If I have to sit for hours, just to get my paperwork sorted by the state, that feels entirely too long to me.

But mere hours would have been an upgrade in the South Asian country of Nepal, where getting a license to operate a motorbike could take years! Nepal is still a low-income country, and most people can’t afford cars, making motorbikes a necessity for getting around.

Worse yet, the licensing system for motorbikes was not only bureaucratic, but corrupt. Often, the only way drivers could get licensed was to bribe officials. Or, if they went without a license, they risked fines, harassment, or jail time if they were in an accident—even if they weren’t at fault. 

Atlas Network partners at Bikalpa–An Alternative saw this problem and took it head on. Bikalpa successfully rallied public support, pressuring their provincial government to reform the licensing system—slashing wait times from over two years, to just two weeks!
