Dear John,
You must know what’s being done — in our names — to asylum-seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border.
A young woman from Honduras came to the border seeking protection and was forcibly sent back to Juarez, Mexico — to await her asylum proceedings. There, she was kidnapped by police for ransom and raped. She told us that although her eyes were covered with tape, she managed to see because her tears soaked through the glue.
John, this is outrageous! It is heartbreaking and an outrage that the U.S. government is endangering the lives of individuals seeking asylum at our southern border. Take action and stand up to these human rights violations. Say, “not in my name!”
Mexican border towns stretching from Tijuana to Matamoros are unprepared to shelter more than 60,000 asylum-seekers who await a hearing in the U.S because of Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy. They are in danger. They are hungry. They are desperate.
The conditions are often so dire that people attempt deadly crossings over rivers and deserts. Amnesty has been on the frontlines of this human rights and humanitarian emergency. And we must continue sending a clear message to our leaders in Washington. We cannot allow the Trump administration to inflict suffering on people in our names. Take action now.
We will keep you updated as this situation develops. Thank you for your compassion and attention.
