Giving Tuesday is upon us. It’s the time of year when all the organizations you love and cherish ask for your support, and this year we hope we’ve made the cut.
There’s no sugarcoating it: 2023 has been an absolutely brutal year for independent and digital media. Nearly every week, some news outlet has announced layoffs or gone out of business entirely.
Common Dreams is facing many of the same pressures that have forced so many others to cut staff or shut down — and with so much of the world in flames and democracies hanging by a thread, independent journalism is more essential than ever.
But to avoid the fate of Jezebel, BuzzFeed News, and so many other outlets that have shut down or laid off staff this year, we absolutely must must must meet our end-of-year fundraising goals — including the strongest possible result on Giving Tuesday, when so many millions of Americans go out of their way to make donations to their favorite causes.
