VIDEO OF THE DAY: Democrats get surprise good news for 2024 election
For many election cycles now, Ohio has been reliably deep-red in both state and national elections. After voters rallied to enshrine reproductive rights into their state constitution earlier this month, however, Democrats who think they can bring the state back into play just got a huge boost. An Ohio board just cleared the way for an independent redistricting measure to appear on the 2024 ballot that would finally dismantle the state's wildly gerrymandered election maps that its GOP-dominated statehouse has imposed on its citizens. Brian Tyler Cohen and Marc Elias break it all down on the latest episode of "Democracy Watch."

24 hostages and 39 Palestinians released in Israel-Hamas truce
Seven weeks from the deadly Hamas terror attack on Israeli civilians, dozens have been freed on both sides and the massacre of Palestinians has been paused. President Biden seemed to welcome the idea that this could be the first step toward a deescalation even as Netanyahu's IDF pledges to return to the onslaught as soon as the hostage swap ceases. Here's hoping cooler heads prevail, but it was a very good day with more promised, and that's something we can be truly thankful for.

Winning an open Arizona seat will take back the House
Yassamin Ansari for Congress: Winning in Arizona means we get our majority back — and losing means that some of the most unhinged election-denying, democracy-hating Trumpers in the country will be headed to Washington. Yassamin Ansari is a fantastic candidate running for Congress in a crucial Arizona seat to make sure we deliver President Biden a new majority for his second term! Can you chip in to help keep Trump's most radical minions out of office?
Biden urges federal judge to uphold affirmative action at military academy
A recent Supreme Court ruling gutted affirmative action in college admissions but left in place affirmative action policies for our nation's service academies. The misleadingly named Students for Fair Admissions wants to end those policies as well, but both the Biden DOJ and West Point are coming to affirmative action's defense, arguing that establishing a diverse officer corps for an increasingly diverse nation is “integral to ensuring national security."
Iowa school official apologizes for using Nazi-linked quote of the day
The Indianola School District used the quote “My honor is my loyalty” both over the public-address system for middle school students, as well as in an email to parents, where it was attributed to one “Heinrich H” – yep, you guessed it, Hitler lieutenant, Heinrich Himmler. Himmler led the Nazi Party’s notorious paramilitary group the SS, and he adopted the phrase for the murderous band of true believers to show their loyalty to Adolf Hitler. The school district later apologized and threw a staff member under the bus for “not realizing the quote was from a highly inappropriate source.” Ya think?

Actor activist John Leguizamo blasts Univision for softball Trump interview
Guest hosting Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," the Colombian-American actor lashed out against the Spanish language broadcaster for platforming the disgraced former President and then cancelling Biden campaign ads that were purchased to run during the interview. "I don’t know what is more shocking... that Univision gave Trump a softball interview or that Trump let a Latin guy into his house?" He later speculated on the reason for the network’s new Pro-Trump posture: “I don’t know all the answers, but maybe it has something to do with Univision’s new co-CEO, Bernardo Gomez, being close friends with Jared Kushner.” Ya think?

Ex-State Dept. official charged with hate crime after harassing street vendor
Video of Stuart Seldowitz went viral this week showing his brazen and incessant harassment of a New York food cart vendor he accused of being a terrorist, saying, among other horrific things, that if Israel did in fact kill 4,000 children in its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza, then it still "wasn't enough." Seldowitz has been charged with hate crime/stalking, second-degree aggravated harassment and additional stalking charges, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed.

Fox host loses it over Kamala Harris photo showing... gas stove?
Fox News whipped itself into a frenzy over a photo of the Vice President cooking at Thanksgiving over a — gasp! — gas stove. This is a scandal, you see, because Fox says the White House wants to take away people's gas stoves. Which isn't true. But doesn't it sound scary! Also scary is the fact that gas stoves have caused serious respiratory problems, climate accelerant emissions, and even death. But even though that one's real, it's hard to pin on Democrats, so it doesn't count.

Bipartisan anger erupts over Medicare Advantage care denials
Medicare Advantage has been hailed as the "private alternative" to the popular healthcare program for senior citizens. But now a bipartisan group of lawmakers has come together to express concerns that insurance companies are preying on seniors and refusing to approve treatments that rarely got denied in the past. You know it's a problem when Republicans are compelled to join Democrats to draw attention to the problem. While deep down GOP lawmakers would love nothing more than to privatize all government programs up to and including Medicare and Social Security, they know ignoring their own aging voter base is a dangerous game. Maybe we should all speak up like our lives depend on it.
