Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Throughout AFSC’s history, we have provided relief to people forced to leave their homes because of war, natural disasters, and other crises. Over the past year, we have assisted earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria, families displaced by war in Ukraine, and refugees from Somalia. Now we’re distributing food and other essentials to people in Gaza. Here are some ways we’re making a difference, thanks to supporters like you. [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Join AFSC’s Action Hour for a Cease-Fire Now (Every Friday at 12 noon ET/ 9 a.m.): [link removed] Across the country, people are taking bold action to demand a cease-fire and humanitarian access for Gaza. As the crisis continues to worsen, we must keep pressuring Congress. If you haven’t already, sign up for our action hour for more ways to get involved and advocate with our elected officials.
Showing humanity through the border walls: [link removed] Since September, Border Patrol has held migrants for days in open-air detention sites without access to basic services. AFSC and partners are advocating to end this inhumane practice. But as officials allow it to continue, we’re providing humanitarian aid through the border walls. Every day, we ensure migrants have access to water, hot meals, and medical attention. Read more from AFSC’s Adriana Jasso.
Tell Congress: Stop government violence in border communities: [link removed] Thank you to everyone who contacted Congress to stop funding immigrant detention, deportations, and other forms of state violence. Every tax dollar that goes to abusive immigration enforcement is money that should be spent on education, health care, and other programs that help our communities. If you haven’t already, please send a message today!
Advocating for second chances for all people: [link removed] In Michigan, AFSC is working to end life and long-term prison sentences—and to give all people the chance to come home. Punishing people for decades or their entire lives not only hurts individuals, it weakens our communities and society at large. Read more from AFSC’s Jon Krieg.
Giving Tuesday Challenge: [link removed] Donate to AFSC’s Refugee Response Fund and help bring humanitarian relief and other support to people escaping war, persecution, and disasters. Your contribution will be matched up to $50,000—and it’s not too early to make a Giving Tuesday gift! Make your donation today.
Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
