John,
The Government has almost doubled the amount political parties can spend on the general election to a massive £35 million.
The change increases the unfair advantages of the bigger parties and makes the election battlefield even more lopsided and undemocratic.
Just look at the statistics.
In 2019, the Tories spent £16.5 million on its general election campaign, Labour spent £12 million and the Lib Dems £14.5 million.
What about the Green Party? We spent just £470 thousand.
This is what we’re up against. It is simply not enough.
The Green Party is better prepared than ever before to fight a general election.
We have a larger electoral base, four fantastic target candidates with campaign teams in place, and a highly effective media operation capable of getting our message out.
The need for powerful Green voices in parliament has also never been greater in what is a vital decade for climate and nature action.
As António Guterres said, this is the age of global boiling. Time is running out.
But we need to raise more money to get the next generation of Green MPs elected.
This week’s change makes it easier for the Tories especially to attract mega donations from the likes of oligarchs and the fossil fuel industry.
So we must step up our efforts to build an ethical war chest to get four Green MPs elected.
It’s David versus Goliath. But with your help we can win.
Please consider making a donation, big or small, to our Four for 24 campaign.
