Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent
Readings of the Day
Lent is a time for us to be humbled, a time to sit and reflect on Jesus’ love for us, and his willingness to die for us. Today’s gospel reminds us again of what Lent is all about: Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection.
We are reminded that Jesus came, not to be served by us, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. Within our work for Catholic Charities, we are called to do the same. We are serving those around us that are in pain and hurting physically and spiritually. We may not be called to literally walk through Christ’s stations, being whipped and chastised, but we are called to bear our crosses. We are asked to go out and care for the least among us.
As we continue to journey through this Lenten season, I invite you to reflect more intently on your role in assisting the poor and vulnerable in our communities. Do not get so caught up in the treadmill of daily tasks that you forget that you are impacting an individual. You are serving Christ each time that you help a client. You are smiling at Christ each time that you look someone in the eyes. Yes, we do this every day, but it is no less important to the 114th client than the very first person you help. Jesus Christ is alive in every person we encounter, and he asks us to love and serve them as he would.
