Hi, Ticketmaster adding on big fees at checkout? Hotels slipping in a resort fee? Airlines pulling a bait-and-switch on the final price? It happens to consumers across the internet, costs the American people tens of billions of dollars a year in fees, and wastes 50 million hours of our time per year. It’s time to put an end to these manipulative, costly junk fees. The good news is that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed a rule to end these hidden fees for everything from booking hotels to buying concert tickets online, renting an apartment, and paying utility bills.1 This will save consumers money, protect consumers from deceptive business practices, and help support honest small businesses. But the rule will only be finalized if the FTC knows the public supports an end to junk fees. Sign the petition: Urge the FTC to put an end to junk fees! Ticketmaster fees could account for up to 78% of the total price of a ticket2 — the price you don’t see often until you’re about to put in your credit card info. These fees are extremely deceptive, and way, way too high — and those fees benefit rich corporate executives while hurting consumers. Upon announcing the proposed rule, FTC Chair Lina Khan said, “All too often, Americans are plagued with unexpected and unnecessary fees they can’t escape. These junk fees now cost Americans tens of billions of dollars per year — money that corporations are extracting from working families just because they can.”3 It’s time to end this corporate greed that punishes consumers with exorbitant fees.
