I Guess Absence Does Make The Heart Grow Fonder…

…It’s not just a cliché.  Decades ago my wife, but not at that moment, met a couple from Northern Ireland that had come to the US as college teachers.  They were surrounded by many students from outside the US and decided to host Thanksgiving for them and asked my wife to serve as their guide to this uniquely American holiday. We have spent many Thanksgivings together since.  About 4 years ago, they retired back to Belfast, and declared that the thing they missed the most from the US was Thanksgiving.  And so they crossed the Atlantic to spend Thanksgiving with us here in East Tennessee yesterday.  It was a very special day.  But stop and think about what that says about America – the heart of the nation to them is Thanksgiving – gratitude.
