In a significant win for supporters of freedom of speech in Australia, last week the Albanese Labor government backed down and withdrew its controversial ‘misinformation and disinformation’ bill from Parliament.



Labor was left with little choice after a growing chorus of industry leaders, academics and media commentators joined One Nation in opposing the legislation – with even the left-wing Guardian newspaper crediting our leadership in defending freedom of speech.



Unfortunately, it’s too early to pop the champagne corks. Labor has a history attacking freedom of speech, going back to Julia Gillard’s attempt to gag the media in 2011 and Kevin Rudd’s demands for a punitive investigation into News Ltd, and we all saw Labor’s attacks on the media for daring to platform the ‘no’ campaign during the referendum. Labor has promised the ‘misinformation’ bill will return to Parliament after it’s gone back to the drawing board. 







Labor's under enormous pressure from the Greens, who also want an inquiry into News Ltd. These parties’ contempt for the intelligence of the Australian voter, and our ability to sort truth from fiction ourselves, is on full display.



And we still can’t trust the Opposition. While they’ve made some noises about freedom of speech, it must not be forgotten they introduced their own ‘misinformation and disinformation’ legislation before losing the election last year. Only One Nation and its supporters stand in defence of freedom of speech, an essential principle of Australian democracy, and we’ll continue to fight against whatever new version of this legislation they attempt.
