Dear John,
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is a time to pause and contemplate all that we have to be thankful for. We also celebrate it by sharing our time and nurture with our loved ones; things that are incredibly valuable but that we may have lost the time to engage in recently.
These last few years have been difficult for many. This Thanksgiving I can’t help but feel that while I have much for which to be grateful, there is still much to be done. The truth is that there IS much to be done, and this Thanksgiving let’s turn our feelings of gratitude into action that improve the quality of life for every American.
As a Council woman for the City of Harrisburg I was lucky to attend the National League of Cities Summit this fall where I had the opportunity to hear Chef Jose Andres, founder of the World’s Central Kitchen. Most of the Conference discussed the gargantuan challenges we face, from a growing unhoused population, to unpredictable climate phenomena, but Chef Jose Andres was focused on how to be better to our fellow human being; that means empowering each other, giving each other hope by ensuring that we all have a role to play in times of crisis, and making sure that we recognize that we all have something to offer each other. This year, for example, he will be making a Turkey Paella fusing his American and Spanish cuisine.
So this Thanksgiving I wish you more than health, happiness and good company. I wish you the ability to rise to the occasion these times ask of us, doing everything in your power to ensure that the world becomes a peaceful one, and making room for those who are coming to the American table, because we know a Thanksgiving dinner is better the more dishes there are.
